Essential ‘Other Stuff’ or Procrastination?

I haven’t managed to write much today. I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to catch up with my reading on Authonomy.  I will probably end up writing until quite late tonight though.

I don’t know what it is about me. I seem to be nocturnal while I’m writing. I certainly write better late at night. I can’t decide if that’s just the way I am, or if it’s because there are fewer disturbances.

I live in a very noisy house. It can be like Grand Central Station here sometimes, though there are other distractions to. I confess to having spent more than a little while lurking on a karate forum.

And then, of course, there’s training. Staying in shape is important, not only to my health, but my writing too. I would be far less likely to sit behind the keyboard if I didn’t wear myself out in my makeshift dojo on a regular basis. I don’t have the patience to sit still unless I’m tired enough.

These days I seem to be in a state of perpetual stiffness. I need to be more careful, perhaps. Today I did weights, a couple of miles running, a bit of core work and some dynamic stretching followed by a bit of punching and kicking on the bag.

I guess it’s a bit like method acting, only this is method writing. I like to train hard because my characters do. I like to not only get inside their heads, but to experience what they are doing too.

I find myself doing some very bizarre things when I’m writing. Things like sticking my finger in a beer bottle and asking other people, people with bigger fingers, to do the same. You’ll find out what that’s all about if you read Yantsu – well, you will if that particular scene makes it to final draft.

Okay, before it becomes too obvious I’ve had a glass of Baileys, I’ll sign off for the night. Maybe it would be better if I gave the writing a miss until tomorrow.
