Karate, Kettlebells, and Crazy Characters

I can’t believe I haven’t set foot inside a dojo since my last grading 5 weeks ago. Sometimes I really hate working away from home. I have still been training, but it’s not the same as working with your dojo mates and having the guidance of your sensei. On the plus side, I have new weapons in my training arsenal – kettlebells. I love them, and I can’t believe I didn’t get some sooner. It’s not like I haven’t had […]

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The good: I’ve finally managed to work around a very sticky plot line in Yantsu. It’s been bugging me for ages and it was going nowhere. Well, this afternoon, I cracked it. I now know exactly where the story is going and I should be able to get a (new) rough draft finished by the end of this month. The bad: The newly tweaked plot means I’ve lost almost half of the book. 😮 Actually, that’s not as scary as […]

Getting into Character

Yeah, I know, you thought that was something only actors did, right? Not true. I like to get inside my characters’ heads when I’m writing and, to do that, I often try out the things they do. Within reason, or course. I mean, I wouldn’t wield an axe in my local Marks and Spencer or spend the night in a bath of cold water – I don’t think. Nah, my characters wouldn’t so that either. Not the axe bit at […]

Surviving the Second Novel

I’m not sure how real authors do it. I’ve been trying for ages to figure out why writing the second novel is so much harder than writing the first. I know my characters better than I know most of my family, and I worked out the major kinks in the plot a long time ago. So it’s not that. There is a lot more going on in my life now than there was when I was writing Sanchin but, if […]

Back in Action

Gosh if I had a penny for every time I’ve written an, ‘I’m back’ post on this blog I’d be able to retire and finally finish the second novel. Seriously though, if you’re going to jump ship for a while, don’t do it straight after the ‘Happy New Year’ post. It does kind of date things instantly. Anyway, I am back and I am writing again. I’ve poked the screenplay into the depths of my underwear drawer documents folder until […]

A Quick Update on Yantsu and Sanchin

First Sanchin. My friend Mark has set up a Facebook group called Sanchin- The Novel to help me to promote the book. Thanks, Spark. Now Mark knows me well enough to know I’d rather eat grated earthworms than promote my own work, but the response has been encouraging so far and I’m slowly getting used to the idea. So, if you have a Facebook account, please join the group and if you add me as a friend I’ll gladly accept. […]

Prodding, Poking and Procrastinating

I’m doing it again!  That thing I do where I can’t stop picking at what I’ve already written and just get on with writing something new. Maybe I need to have the words, “This is only the first draft!“ tattooed on my hands so I get a reminder whenever I look down at the keyboard. Or perhaps I could try hubby’s trick of switching off the screen. His theory being, if you can’t see it you’re not tempted to edit […]

An Update on Sanchin and Yantsu

First the good news about Sanchin. It is now available on an Amazon near you. Well, that is it you have one near you. Here’s the list of counties it’s currently available in. Now for Yantsu. I’m pleased to say it’s coming along well again. One of my poor characters has a dilemma that I’m not sure how he’s going to solve. It’s a tough decision for him and I don’t think he can win which ever side of the […]

Yantsu and the Mystery Bug

Well, I can finally report that I seem to be back on track with Yantsu. The words are pouring onto the page at the moment and it’s left me with a dilemma for the rest of the weekend. Do I keep going while things are flowing so well, or do I take a break and recharge the old batteries while I have the chance? The scenes I wrote today were particularly difficult ones. The word harrowing springs to mind, and […]

A Kick in the Pants

I think I’ve finally found the kick in the pants I need to get me writing regularly again. Well, it’s not really a kick in the pants, it’s more like a bit of encouragement. I’ve been reading novelist Holly Lisle’s newsletter for a while now and, just as I was looking for the motivation to get stuck into Yantsu, I got a newsletter from Holly telling me about her Write a Book With Me project. Briefly, Holly is writing her […]
